CVDKGrand Planetarium Eccentric Si14
Created in collaboration with Revolution, the CVDK Grand Planetarium Eccentric Si14 gives the complete mechanical planetarium a distinctly contemporary character. All eight planets orbit the Sun in real time across an iridescent oxidised-silicon dial, with hand-painted Super-LumiNova bringing the planetary display to life after dark. The edition is limited to six pieces.
Silicon,transformed
The dial is constructed from nine separate pieces of oxidised silicon. A controlled oxide layer creates interference colours across the surface, shifting between deep blue and violet as the light changes.
Silicon is normally encountered inside a mechanical watch, particularly in components such as escapements and hairsprings. Here, the material becomes part of the visual identity of the watch itself, forming a constantly changing backdrop for the mechanical Solar System.

Specifications
The Eccentric Planetarium displays the real-time orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune around the Sun. Hours and minutes are joined by running seconds through the continuously rotating CVDK Sun logo, while an outer zodiac scale connects Earth’s position in its orbit to the constellations along the ecliptic.

Caseback
The Eccentric Planetarium module is driven by the automatic CVDK Calibre CKM-01. Running at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz, the movement uses a free-sprung balance and provides a power reserve of up to 60 hours.

The Eccentric Planetarium
The Grand Planetarium Eccentric is the only mechanical wristwatch to display the real-time orbits of all eight planets in our Solar System. Mercury completes its journey around the Sun in 87.97 days; Neptune requires 164.80 years.
At the centre of the mechanism is Earth’s 365.24-day cycle. From there, separate gear trains increase the speed for Mercury and Venus and progressively reduce it for the outer planets. Together, the planetarium gear train contains 3,338 teeth and translates eight vastly different astronomical periods into one mechanical display.
The Solar System after dark
Each planet is individually hand-painted in Super-LumiNova, allowing the complete Solar System to remain visible when the surrounding light fades. Selected raised sections of the orbital paths also illuminate, while luminous markings identify the orbital period of each planet.
Against the deep blue-violet silicon dial, these points and paths of light reveal a second expression of the planetarium that only appears in darkness.

Made in theCVDK atelier
Every Christiaan van der Klaauw watch is made by hand and subjected to extensive quality testing in the atelier. Each watch is delivered in a CVDK presentation box and covered by a three-year warranty on the movement and case. Watches from the Collection of Astronomical Masterpieces are also supplied with a removable Swiss Kubik watch winder to keep the astronomical complication running accurately.
